DON'T THROW IN THE TOWEL—HELP IS HERE
A new interactive website, focusing on cosmetic surgery, allows consumers to directly discuss their experiences with cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures and vote on whether they’d do it again. The site was inspired by the founders wife, who pointed out that it was easier to get informed on hotel towels than a $2000 laser skin treatment. He set out to create an ‘authentic forum to share opinions and experiences, much in the way hotel consumer review sites have done so for travelers.’

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery  partnered with RealSelf.com to provide consumers with an unbiased consumer resource. It encourages conversation, providing a single source where people can go to ask questions, share their stories, and help make decisions. The site is free for users. RealSelf.com invites experts to contribute, uncompensated, up-to-date information on safety, scientific data and standards. According to RealSelf.com’s website, they strive to be: Informative, expert, unbiased and complete.

”The Aesthetic Society recognizes the powerful impact social media has in supporting the consumer’s opportunities to learn firsthand about cosmetic experiences,” said ASAPS president Alan Gold, of Great Neck, NY. “RealSelf.com has proven itself to be different from other Web sites in that it represents a consumer community that discusses cosmetic surgery without a commercial bias. We’re excited to see our members get involved in a social media Web site that shares our commitment to accuracy, ethics, and patient education,” said Dr. Gold. “Our involvement will help consumers make well-informed decisions based on science and facts rather than marketing promises and medically inaccurate information.”

UNDERSTANDING ACCREDITATION
Did you know that there are no national regulations for your safety with cosmetic procedures completed outside of a hospital setting? The rules vary by location, so while there may be state-sponsored regulation of these centers, your care is not guaranteed. The Lawler Centre always suggests patients educate themselves to ensure they are in good hands when selecting a free-standing or office-based facility. There are many advantages to these office-based facilities, which are well worth your effort to learn more—they are less costly, more private and less stressful.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 46 percent of procedures took place in an office-based facility. The ASAPS require all their members to perform surgery exclusively in accredited facilities, which is a great reason to select a doctor who is a member of this organization. When you meet with a surgeon, you should always ask, at a minimum, these important questions.

1. Is the location where my procedure will be performed both accredited and in good standing with the accrediting body?
2. Is this location where you regularly perform procedures like the one I am considering?
3. What is your plan in the event of an emergency?
4. What hospital would I be taken to, what is its distance from here, and do you have privileges at that hospital for the procedure I’m considering?
5. How long ago was your most recent accreditation review?
