…During the ASPS/Leerink Swann Investor Roundtable: The Future of Plastic Surgery program held Nov. 3 in Chicago during Plastic Surgery 2008, more than 50 investors, industry leaders and physicians gathered over the course of the day to discuss the state of the specialty, as well as discuss the pros, cons and traits of products in the pipeline that could impact how plastic surgery is practiced.
…Several plastic surgeons participated in panels throughout the day, offering their unfiltered analyses and engaging in wide-ranging discussions on the products – and whether those were likely to be embraced by physicians and patients.
…The panel’s discussion of body contouring technologies featured warnings from physicians to potential investors about the failure to focus more of their attention on science while bringing increased scrutiny to products that arrive accompanied by significant hype.
…“Be suspicious of things that bowl you over with marketing rather than data,” noted panelist Steven Teitelbaum, MD, Santa Monica, Calif., who noted that one stark example of hype trumping science came in the short-lived “Threadlift” push that ultimately proved to be ineffective. When the product’s freefall stopped, one of the companies that produced it had been forced to close its doors.
…Industry representatives noted that the sagging U.S. economy would speck difficult times ahead for laser-based products, because during economic downturns patients often delay elective treatment – and due to that delay, companies that provide those treatments don’t invest in those technologies. The result: manufacturers with overstocks well beyond their ability to financially sustain. (Exactly one month after the Investor Roundtable, Waltham, Massachusetts-based Rhytec Inc. – manufacturer of the $79,000 Portrait plasma skin resurfacing device filed for bankruptcy.)
