If you are unhappy with your breast size or shape, why not make 2019 your "breast year" ever by scheduling a consultation appointment with Dr. Lawler to discuss breast augmentation procedures to improve your shape and give your self-esteem a much needed boost? Additionally, advanced surgical techniques have made most breast augmentation procedures minimally invasive with short recovery times that do not require overnight hospital stays.

Breast Enlargement

The most popular type of breast augmentation is breast enlargement using implants. Women who have had one or both breasts removed due to cancer often choose breast implants to restore their natural shape. Saline breast implants provide a uniform firmness and feel many women prefer over other types of breast implants. The sterile saline solution contained in a saline breast implant is naturally absorbed by the body if a leak occurs. "Structured" saline implants offer an inner complex that enhances the feel and movement of saline breast implants. Silicone is another material used to make breast implants. Silicone is a soft but firm gel-like substance that mimics the makeup of actual breast tissue. Both saline and silicone breast implants have their advantages and disadvantages that Dr. Lawler would be happy to discuss with you during your consultation appointment.

Breast Lifts (Mastopexies)

A breast lift involves removal of excess skin and small amounts of breast tissue to reshape and raise sagging or misshapen breasts. Although a mastopexy won't significantly change breast size, breast lifts are sometimes done during a breast reduction or breast augmentation procedure. Women opt for breast lifts when pregnancy, extreme weight loss or aging has caused breast tissue to lose its firmness and sag. Breast lifts are also useful for repositioning nipples that point downward, one breast is lower than the other or areolae are stretched disproportionately to breasts.

Breast Reductions

Surgery to reduce breast size is called a "reduction mammaplasty". Your cosmetic surgeon will remove excess skin, tissue and fat from breasts that are causing discomfort or are not proportionate to your overall body size. Women get breast reductions because larger than normal breasts when shoulder, back or neck pain interferes with their quality of life, they suffer constant skin rashes under their breasts, cannot participate in certain physical activities and/or have problems finding clothing and bras that fit properly. In some cases, women experience emotional distress due to large breasts and simply want to feel better about themselves by reducing breast size.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Women who have had full or partial mastectomies elect to undergo breast reconstruction surgery involving placement of saline or silicone breast implants to reconstruct breasts lost to cancer or traumatic injury. Another type of breast reconstruction surgery is a tissue flap procedure using the patient's body tissues instead of implants. In some cases, the flap procedure is combined with insertion of implants to reconstruct breasts. For women with early stage breast cancer who have undergone a lumpectomy to remove cancerous breast tissue, breast reconstruction allows them to restore uniformity to one or both breasts distorted or reduced in size by a lumpectomy.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

A condition called gynecomastia in boys and men causes noticeable swelling of breast tissue due to hormone imbalances involving testosterone and estrogen. Breast swelling can affect both or one male breast. Although gynecomastia is not a serious health problem, it can be embarrassing and lead to self-esteem issues, especially in adolescent boys and younger men. In addition to swelling, gynecomastia may produce breast tenderness or breast achiness. Gynecomastia affects about one of four men between 50 and 69 as testosterone levels decline and estrogen "dominance" starts enlarging breast tissue. If gynecomastia does not resolve itself naturally or medications meant to restore hormone balance in men does not work, male breast reduction surgery at the Lawler Centre is recommended to flatten and enhance a man's chest contour.
